Bidimensional Parameters and Local Treewidth

چکیده
For several graph theoretic parameters such as vertex cover and dominating set, it is known that if their values are bounded by k then the treewidth of the graph is bounded by some function of k. This fact is used as the main tool for the design of several fixed-parameter algorithms on minor-closed graph classes such as planar graphs, single-crossing-minor-free graphs, and graphs of bounded genus. In this paper we examine the question whether similar bounds can be obtained for larger minor-closed graph classes, and for general families of parameters including all the parameters where such a behavior has been reported so far. Given a graph parameter P , we say that a graph family F has the parameter-treewidth property for P if there is a function f(p) such that every graph G ∈ F with parameter at most p has treewidth at most f(p). We prove as our main result that, for a large family of parameters called contraction-bidimensional parameters, a minor-closed graph family F has the parameter-treewidth property if F has bounded local treewidth. We also show “if and only if” for some parameters, and thus this result is in some sense tight. In addition we show that, for a slightly smaller family of parameters called minor-bidimensional parameters, all minor-closed graph families F excluding some fixed graphs have the parameter-treewidth property. The bidimensional parameters include many domination and covering parameters such as vertex cover, feedback vertex set, dominating set, edge-dominating set, q-dominating set (for fixed q). We use these theorems to develop new fixed-parameter algorithms in these contexts.

Fast Algorithms for Hard Graph Problems: Bidimensionality, Minors, and Local Treewidth
This paper surveys the theory of bidimensional graph problems. We summarize the known combinatorial and algorithmic results of this theory, the foundational Graph Minor results on which this theory is based, and the remaining open problems.
متن کاملOn Supergraphs Satisfying CMSO Properties
Let CMSO denote the counting monadic second order logic of graphs. We give a constructive proof that for some computable function f , there is an algorithm A that takes as input a CMSO sentence φ, a positive integer t, and a connected graph G of maximum degree at most ∆, and determines, in time f(|φ|, t) · 2O(∆·t) · |G|O(t), whether G has a supergraph G′ of treewidth at most t such that G′ |= φ...
متن کاملApproximate tree decompositions of planar graphs in linear time
Many algorithms have been developed for NP-hard problems on graphs with small treewidth k. For example, all problems that are expressable in linear extended monadic second order can be solved in linear time on graphs of bounded treewidth. It turns out that the bottleneck of many algorithms for NP-hard problems is the computation of a tree decomposition of width O(k). In particular, by the bidim...
متن کاملThe Bidimensional Theory of Bounded-Genus Graphs
Bidimensionality is a powerful tool for developing subexponential fixed-parameter algorithms for combinatorial optimization problems on graph families that exclude a minor. This paper completes the theory of bidimensionality for graphs of bounded genus (which is a minorexcluding family). Specifically we show that, for any problem whose solution value does not increase under contractions and who...
متن کاملTreewidth in Verification: Local vs. Global
The treewidth of a graph measures how close the graph is to a tree. Many problems that are intractable for general graphs, are tractable when the graph has bounded treewidth. Recent works study the complexity of model checking for state transition systems of bounded treewidth. There is little reason to believe, however, that the treewidth of the state transition graphs of real systems, which we...
